About Developmental Disabilities
As we enter the 21st century our society is striving to improve the lives of all its members and provide the opportunities for personal growth and development to all. In order to do so, we need to understand each other, and our respective needs and abilities.
A developmental disability is a condition that affects a person's ability to learn and function independently. People with developmental disabilites have a slower rate of intellectual development and limited daily living skills, though many can learn to live independently. Any circumstance that impairs the brain's development before birth, during birth, or in childhood can cause a developmental disability.
Sadly, developmental disabilities are often misunderstood. They are sometimes confused with mental illnesses and perceived of as dangerous. Nothing could be further from the truth. People with developmental disabilities have hopes and dreams like everyone else. With support and understanding, people with a developmental disability can develop their abilities to the fullest. They have much to offer as members of the community.
