Hope was started by the parents of a developmentally disabled child in 1997 and opened its doors in 1998. In NJ in 1980, Alex and Mary Casatelli were part of a group of eight parents of disabled adults who realized that their children could outlive them. These eight parents started a program that was directed by the people who knew their children best, them! That pprogram is still in existance and houses 36 people. Alex's health forced a move to a warmer climate and he resigned his position as Chairman of the Board/CEO and moved to Tarpon Springs, Florida.
Once Alex & Mary moved here they discovered a need for residential services when, they couldn't find a group home for their son, Chris. Chris had lived in a beautiful home with 5 roommates prior to the move. In addition to his homelife, Chris worked in a sheltered workshop, participated in his local church, and in general had a very busy activity schedule. Now he sat around the house all day watching TV. After seeing what facilities were available Alex and Mary began their retirement by founding Hope! Their goal was to create a home, a place where an extended 'family' would live, doing all those things families do. Day programs, part-time jobs, dinners out at local restaurants, participation in Special Olympics and the MASH Theatre Ensemble, shopping as well as pool parties and backyard barbeques are just some of the things that they do!
